My Research Topic

The topic I pick is sports because I am very interested in sports.




What have we been studying in class this year? In gym I learn how to play basketball, baseball and football.
Which subjects appeal to me? The sport that appeal to me is football, basketball, track and baseball 
What are people writing about? The latest sports and the highlights from the other day.
What's most interesting to me? Sports are fun to play and its good to watch.
Can I find information about that? Yes you can find information anywhere about sports. For example Sport Center.




4b) Why are you most interested in the topic of argument selected? I am most interested in sports  because it is my hobby and also its my favorite thing to do. For example I played basketball, track and baseball and football growing up playing on teams.

Zoos


Should animals be kept in zoos? No animals should not be kept in zoos because they are misused for humans entertainment. Also they are lock up behind cages which is wrong.
Military Recruiting


  1. Do you think military recruiters should be allowed on high school campuses? Why or why not? Yes because some people are 18 years old and they can sign up. Also some people may want to go into the military.
  2. Are there any tactics used by the military to recruit young people that you disagree with? Explain. No they is no tactics the military used to recruit young people that I disagree with. 
  3. Should the military be allowed to recruit immigrants who are not yet citizens of the U.S.? Why or why not? No because they are not US citizens yet. Also it is illegal to recruit immigrants. 
  4. How might the U.S. military attract new recruits without returning to a draft system? The U.S. military can say we give you a job and free education if you serve. 



Sports mascots


  1. Do you think sports organizations should regulate what names and mascots their teams use? Why or why not? Yes I think sports organization should regulate mascots names because the names can be racist. Also it is offensive to use these names.
  2. Why do you think some Native Americans are offended by the use of Indian names, symbols and mascots by sports teams? Native Americans are offended by the use of Indians names and symbol because they found it racist. Also how the american people treated them back in the day. Example Trail of tears. 
  3. Would you be upset if your favorite team had to change its name or mascot? Explain. No I would not be upset because it could be racist and someone I know can take offense.

Sports Youth


  1. Name some positive aspects of participating in youth sports programs. Some positive aspects of participating in youth sports programs is you get good excise. Also kids will be in good shape. 
  2. Are there any negative aspects of participating in youth sports programs? Explain. No there is no negative aspect in participating in youth sports. 
  3. How can parents and coaches help make participation in sports programs a positive experience for young athletes? Coaches  and parents can motivate kids to participate in youth sports. They can also tell them the benefits of doing youth sports. 
  4. What steps should be taken to lessen the risk of injuries in young athletes? Stretching can help lessen the chance of injuries. Also drills can lessen the chance of injuries.

Should leagues impose salary caps for athletes pay? Yes because athletes who are good would get a lot of money and the teams with the most money will get the best players. Then teams with less money would get average players. It wouldn't be fair.





Should cheerleading be considered a sport? No cheerleading should not be a sport because all they do is cheer. They just stand there and look good. Also it is too distracting for men.



Should schools and sport organization ban the use of controversial mascots and nicknames? Yes school sports and sports organization should ban nicknames because it could be racial. Also people may take offense to these mascots nicknames.



Should athletes be allowed to take performance-enhancing substances? No athletes shouldn't be able to take performance-enhancing substances because they will be cheating and also they health will be affected.


Should mixed martial arts be banned? No mixed martial arts shouldn't be banned because  a lot of people like it and also its a sport. Also mixed martial arts is a good workout. It is also a good self defense tool.

Are sports programs for children and teenagers too intense? No sports programs is not too intense for children and teenagers because it allowed them too show discipline. Also give them exercise and get them in shape. Sports are good for the body.


Should student-athletes in college be compensated? Student-athletes in college shouldn't be compensated because most athletes get scholarships where the school pay for there education. Also they are playing for the love of the game. Because it is there life.


Does Title IX discriminate against male athletes? Title IX does discriminate against male athletes. For example 2,200 men’s athletic teams have been eliminated. Another example is  Colgate University eliminated men’s baseball after 107 years.

For Sports mascots: Sports mascots cheer up the crowd and get the fans into the game. Also mascots do funny stunts and they entertain you.
Against Sports mascots: Some mascots have racial nicknames. For example the Indians.

For Youth Sports: Kids can stay in shape and it is also a good way to let your emotions go.
Against Youth sports: Kids can get hurt from physical sports.

For zoos: Animals can have a good home and good food.
Against zoos: Animals are kept in captivity.

For  Military Recruiting: People protect our nation and people who cant afford college can get education joining the arm focus.

  1. What did wiki software allow Web users to do that the Mosaic browser did not? Wiki allowed users to modify web pages. Not having editing tools but by typing on web pages.
  2. What do blogs and wikis have in common?  They both allow collaboration. Anyone could modify and use.
  3. What problem did a young Jimmy Wales find with the World Book Encyclopedia?  That it had to be constantly updated. Once a book is written you cannot change it.
  4. How was Jimmy Wales inspired by the World Book Encyclopedia to create Wikipedia?  Put the world book on the internet. Here it could constantly be updated.
  5. How have encyclopedias inspired you in your own life?  They helped me with my homework. They took me to places I might never see.
  6. Why did Nupedia fail?  After a year it only had 92 articles published. Another 150 in draft it was to slow.
  7. How did wiki software change the ideas behind Nupedia?  People could write and change and update articles. Now articles could come from everywhere.
  8. What is “crowdsourcing?”  Crowdsourcing is when you enlist the services of a number of people for a task. For example what Wikipedia does.
  9. What do you think about the concept of “any fool in the world” being able to write articles for Wikipedia?  Its like graffiti if it is wrong it will be corrected. Most people want to do the right thing.
  10. Do agree with the idea that “total idiots” could edit Wikipedia and of that being a good thing? Explain.  You will have idiots were ever you go. This will just make people who know want to call them out on it.
  11. Why do you think Wikipedia grew so fast and became so popular in such a short amount of time?  Because people could always correct something that is wrong. This made it top notch and better than anything else.
  12. Do you believe Sanger’s elitist attitude was a good thing or a bad thing for Wikipedia? A bad thing. Average people do have intelligence . 
  13. What did you learn from the anecdote about the Wikipedia article on Einstein going to Albania for a passport in 1935?  You cant believe everything you read. Research what you read to make sure it is a fact.
  14. Explain this quote from the article: “I can’t imagine who could have written such detailed guidelines other than a bunch of people working together...It’s common in Wikipedia that we’ll come to a solution that’s really well thought out because so many minds have had a crack at improving it.”  When so many different minds all have a say by the end there will be enough information to get it right.
  15. The author of the article states that Wikipedia “grew organically.” What does he mean by that?  It grew without so many rules of who could and who could not. It was a community not a dictator.
  16. How has Wikipedia “been the greatest collaborative knowledge project in history?”  So many different minds from all over the planet have injected there knowledge.
  17. Based on your own opinion and experience with Wikipedia, do you agree with the above statement or disagree with it? Explain.  I agree with it because never before have so many people been able to get together for something so big. The internet made this possible.
  18. What does the author mean by “wiki-crack?”  He means wiki-crack is the pleasure that a person gets from knowledge has to share.
  19. Based on the article, do you believe Wikipedia is a reliable source of information?  Yes I do but make sure you read enough of the subject you are researching.
  20. Do you believe its possible for a 16-year-old from New Jersey to write “insightful” Wikipedia articles?  Yes because he already did. I believe kids younger than that already have.
  21. How do you feel about basing your own research on something a 16-year-old wrote on Wikipedia?  If I research it and it looks and sounds good. Why not. Some 12 years olds are already in college.
  22. What does Jimmy Wales mean by this mission statement: “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge?”  He means by going on Wikipedia that this is now possible.
  23. Do you agree or disagree with this mission statement?  Yes we are all just a button away from this knowledge with the internet.
  24. Do you think Wikipedia has succeeded in its mission?  Beyond its wildest dreams. The enoyclopedia is a dinosaur.
  25. Do you agree or disagree that ordinary people, people without degrees, can “be part of the process of creating and distributing knowledge?”   Yes everybody has intelligence in different areas. Everybody can contribute.
  26. Based on your reading of the article, would you yourself use Wikipedia for your academic research? Yes I will use Wikipedia for my academic research. Not only would I but I have already done so.
  27. Would you yourself like to write and/or edit Wikipedia articles in order to be “a part of the process of creating and distributing knowledge?” Why or why not?  Yes if I had the knowledge of a certain topic that was better than what was already written.

 1) If you believe that all students should be Web literate, what is the best strategy for your school to prepare you with this skill? Explain.   I believe all students should be web literacy because all students should know how to search up  information. The best strategy for my school is to  have a class to teach us how to be web literacy. Also students should learn on there own because in college they have to search up information and find the right resources to write they papers. Also with being web literacy you can know what sources are reliable.
2) What skills should all teachers have to be Web literate? Explain.    All teachers should have certain skills so they can teach they students. They should have the skills to type. They should have the skill to find reliable sources. Also they should have the skills to search information up and teach they students to be web literacy.
3) What role should school filtering play in your school district? Explain why schools should block or not block Web sites.   I believe school filtering play a huge role in my school district.  School should not block as many websites because some websites are useful to teachers and students. For examples youtube is useful for students and teachers. Teachers can show students education videos on youtube and students can learn from those videos.
4) Do you believe the Internet is as big a transformer of culture as the printing press? Explain.  I believe the internet is a big transformer of culture as the printing press.  The internet change a lot of things. The internet is a resource where you can keep in touch with your friends. Instead of looking in newspaper to get information,  now you can find it with a click of a button.
5) If yes, what parts of our culture do you believe will be most affected? Explain. The biggest part of our culture that will change is how to find information quickly. Also technology change and it is easier to search for information and easier to learn new things.  Our culture change from the years from the printing press for the better. The internet is a huge culture change.
